Role Requirements
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to carry out general preventative maintenance, repairs and statutory checks on our fixed and mobile plant across the surface site and active underground workings. Some weekend emergency cover will be required on an ‘on-call’ rota basis.
The successful candidate will have completed a relevant apprenticeship or training qualification and have a broad engineering knowledge including maintenance of electro-hydraulic systems, pumps, light and heavy plant, vehicles, some computer-use skills, welding and machining skills (lathe, mill etc.)

Principle responsibilities/Role tasks
Specific duties as part of the role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Day to day general maintenance and statutory checks
- Carrying out planned maintenance checks in line with HSE Mines Regulations 2014 standards
- Operating plant and handheld machinery
- Keeping records of materials and equipment
- Finding and repairing faults
- Replacing parts, resetting controls and cleaning machinery
- Responding to emergency breakdowns
- Following procedures and safety standards for all tasks undertaken.
- Conducting Two-Minute Risk Assessments (2MRA’s) for all work tasks undertaken.
- Working at height, often over open holes of significant depth, wearing appropriate PPE, including fall-arrest equipment.
- Carrying out surface duties as and when required. These can range from operating plant to assisting other trades.
- Maintaining your personal work equipment and safety gear to a suitable standard to ensure compliance.
- Undertaking internal and external training as required by the Company to ensure suitable competency for the role.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental protocols
Successful candidates will be expected to undertake any other duties reasonably required, appropriate to safety, and the skills and experience requirements of the role.
Working Environment
The role will be required to work both on the surface and in the underground environment. The Maintenance Fitter will be required to operate hand tools and mobile plant such as telehandlers, Land Rovers and other underground mining equipment, as well as working manually with their hands.
Cornish Metals Ltd will supply you with all the necessary PPE required to work safely and do all it reasonably can to protect you from risk of injury and ill health, including completion, and maintenance of, risk assessments and implementing systems of work designed to protect your health and safety. Despite this, you will hold a significant amount of personal responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues and the nature of the role and the physical environment in which you will work means that you will be exposed to uncomfortable conditions regularly.
- Your workplace will frequently be dark, where the only light source will be from a headlamp.
- The mine conditions are wet, both above you and underfoot. You will be supplied with wellingtons and overalls which must be worn while you undertake your duties.
- The work will result in you being in close proximity to equipment and rock that is muddy and ochre in colour. You will get muddy and greasy, however showers and washing facilities are provided at the end of shift.
- Temperatures in the mine range from cold in the shallow workings, sometimes as low as 2 degrees Celsius, with wind-chill from mechanical ventilation, to as high as +30 degrees Celsius in the deepest workings.
- The humidity in the mine can be up to 100%.
- Due to ventilation both natural and mechanical the mine workings are often draughty.
- You will be walking over muddy, uneven, and loose, ground, with steep gradients and climbing ladders whilst wearing protective footwear, coveralls and harnesses.
- It is often a very noisy environment, and you will be required to wear hearing protection regularly.
- You may be required to operate handheld tools which may be heavy and loud and exhibit high levels of vibration.
- Manual handling of heavy loads up to 20 kg (it being impossible to mechanise most of the physical tasks in the mine environment).
- You will frequently work at height and/or from ropes or fall restraint equipment, you will be required to train in the use of and wear fall arrest equipment.
- South Crofty is a deep, underground mine. The main access shaft, New Cooks Kitchen Shaft, is approximately eight hundred meters deep. Employees must adhere to strict safety protocols and regulatory requirements to ensure the wellbeing of yourself and your colleagues in such a remote environment.
- To reach the deeper levels of the mine, the primary access is via a small 8-person cage, with an emergency second means of egress provided with a 4-person ‘bullet cage’ of 800mm diameter.
- Parts of the mine can be narrow with restricted height. You may be expected to work in confined spaces accordingly.
Functions that are considered intrinsic to the role are:
- Climbing ladders (in dark and wet conditions), especially in underground areas to access different levels of the mine and as a means of emergency/alternative exit.
- A good base level of fitness and ability to undertake manual handling to enable the basic role requirements to be performed.
- The ability to ride inside the shaft cages, which are of limited dimensions.
- The ability to wear fall-arrest harnesses and associated restraints.
You will be offered, and expected to cooperate with, a (free) health assessment at regular intervals.
Key relationships
The role will report to the Mechanical Foreman, but there will be frequent interaction with the Engineering Manager.
The role will also involve working closely with the technical staff, including the engineers and project managers involved in the dewatering and re-accessing of the mine, as well as ongoing exploration activities.
External relationships will include suppliers, external contractors, training providers and regulatory bodies.

- Knowledge of site, equipment and workshop safety legislation and safe operating procedures
- Practical skills for repairing and maintaining equipment, welding, machining etc.

- Current driving license, or alternative ability to efficiently undertake the duties of the role or the travel to work.
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in a company in the extractive, construction or industrial sectors
- Forklift/telehandler licence
- Experience with fixed plant or mobile plant, particularly electro-hydraulic systems, pumps and associated infrastructure
- Previous experience in safety critical roles.
